Hadleigh House
Vacations are about discovering places that are fascinating and different . It's great to have experiences that create their own special memories .
Kia ora - We are Jon and Shirley, owners and curators of Hadleigh , it is our home . We discovered Hadleigh in 1998 , for us it was a retreat for a few days , an escape from our respective business careers. We were fascinated with the property , it was a superb place to stay , so comfortable the ambience was palpable , a home of understated luxury, set in rambling gardens with mature trees . The location was ideal , a quiet haven yet just a short walk to the CBD, shops, restaurants, park and cultural precinct. It also proved to be a great base for day trips to numerous coastal, mountain and winery areas .
We were so enchanted , we stayed a week and ulimately negotiated to purchase Hadleigh . Our initial Business Plans were abandoned as we recognised Hadleigh was a happy house and should be shared . With no professional hospitality experience to draw on we set about welcoming guests as we would our friends and family .
This was the start of an amazing journey , connecting with people from all parts of the globe .
Over the last 11 years we have sought to:
*Understand the requirements that make staying pleasurable .
*Learn about our guests and what interests them.
*Immediately respond to guests needs
*Create an environment that is enjoyable
*Assist with problems that can arise from travel.
*Know the Christhchurch area and surrounds intimately.
*Offer quality accommadtion that is affordable.
*Assist with proven recommendations for activities and travel.
*Introduce complimentary goods and services to surprise.
* Delight with extra Special Packages.
We have also:
* Retained the ambience that first attracted us to Hadleigh.
*Received a Supreme Heritage award for Restoration.
* Created a Boutique Lodge with the full range of modern amenities.
*Become one of New Zealands pre eminent accommodations .
* Learned to value our heritage , the environment and good corporate citizenship .
Cartwright Suite
This is a large elegant room, a magnificent wall of
closet space designed by "Urban Archaeology" and constructed from recycled native Rimu beautifully replicates the style of the period while ensuring ample storage for the traveller. The furnishings are Victorian and include both grand mother and grandfather chairs. The ornate fireplace and plush soft furnishings are evocative. The sumptuous king bed can convert to comfy twins if required. I love looking down onto the garden from this sun drenched room. I can see the pond, the bird bath, and if lucky a large Kereru or native wood pigeon lazily splashing there, though more often it is a gaggle of delightful native fantails. The bathroom is just grand, it was once the nursery in the 'old'
days so as you can imagine it is as big as an average bedroom! It is all beautifully tiled with concealed lighting, dimmers heated floor and mirrors above the native Rimu vanity. There is a walk in shower, but perhaps best of all is the big original claw footed bath which sits away from the wall
Goddard Suite
The Goddard is a large sunny room, there are French doors opening to a private balcony, lean out and touch the trees. In Spring there are often nests with little fledgings waiting impatiently for mothers return. The colour scheme is neutral creams and whites with queen oak bed and headboard. The antique armoire is French, the writing table and chair is old English Pine, there is a chaise for relaxing and a comfortable easy chair. The art is eclectic New Zealand and includes an etching by Peter Leitch from his 1975 Historic Houses series. Jon, your host and his younger brother Chris are both design engineers by profession and erstwhile artists who also have works on display. The ensuite features a magnificent slate shower, the vanity unit is crafted from native New Zealand Rimu.
Kempthorne Suite
The Kempthorne Suite is our smallest, but has a cosy romantic feel to it. The morning sun peeps in the lattice windows through a sea of tiny budded roses which have relentlessly clambered to the second floor. Looking down, there is a brick courtyard edged with maples and bright blooming rhodos through Spring and Summer. The room is comfy with large easy chairs, a queen bed, feather down duvet and fluffy lambswool underlay. There is a wall of storage, victorian chest with matching bed side tables and an ornate guilt mirror. "Time for reflection" by New Zealand artist David Johns hangs above the original tiled Arts & Craft fireplace. There is also an additional sitting room with victorian writing desk and single bed. The drapes and bed covers .are in the style of William Morris the influential textile designer of the Art & Crafts period. The private bathroom is accessed independently from each room. The Kempthorne suite offers five star accommodation and is suitable for a group of three, close to the heart of Christchurch
Kowhai Suite
The Kowhai suite is affectionately known as the garden suite as french doors open wide straight onto the garden from the sitting / dining area. It is a magic place to be when the afternoon sun streams in. The garden lounger chairs look enticing too. The Kowhai is actually a fully serviced ground floor apartment extending to over 800sq ft. We understand it was once the servants quarters and main kitchen for Hadleigh homestead. There is little of the original remaining save the outline of the large inglenook fireplace which is now home to a large beautifully appointed Italian slate bathroom! Architectural interest is retained in both the original lattice and stained glass windows. A modern touch is the loft, a very private space with sloping ceiling and Queen bed. The main bedroom is on the ground floor it has a super king which can be converted to twin beds if required, there is a native rimu chest, side cabinets and antique wardrobe. A full laundry and kitchen with all modern facilities makes this suite perfect for longer stays. Access to the secure garden makes it ideal for a family. It is also a cost effective option for friends travelling together who seek five star accommodation in central Christchurch. It is important to note that while the Kowhai suite is self contained, all our guests are welcome throughout Hadleigh and can join other guests at breakfast, for Happy Hour and indeed enjoy all the amenities.
